Goodmorning!! So what did today hold? Well we started out going to the boys house to check on how David and Hassen did for the night (Henry decided that because it was storming out the night before, it would be best to have them spend the night). They seemed to be doing very well, and seemed very happy to be there. Ronnie and Alex were still home to make sure they were doing alright but unfortunately we all had different things going on, and we don’t know them well enough to just leave them at the house. This meant that we had to let them go out on their own for a day..which seems counter productive, but we didn’t have another option.
Henry and I went to Sonrise Babies home until a bit after lunch. It was lots of fun to play with their babies and I even had the chance to rock a baby to sleep in my arms (I don’t think this will ever stop being something that is such a good feeling). After Sonrise we went to the market to buy some new clothes for the boys, which you would think would be a easy and quick task, but it isn’t. To try to figure out how tall each boy is, and what his waist size is, etc was much more difficult then I had thought. In the end though, we had a ‘new’ shirt, pants and underwear for each of them.
We also go the chance to go to see another location that takes care of about 23 boys. It was crazy to see how much room they had both inside and outside. I gave me a dream of what I would love to be able to do for the boys that we are working with, another thing to pray for.
The rest of the time was spent with Henry, discussing the best situation for us to help the new boys, and then we headed to the Sanctuary. We got there a bit late, and it seemed that it was going to be an interesting night. David was not there yet (even though he was told to be there earlier) and another boy who has lived there for some time and was in charge of supper was also away. Shortly after we arrived though, David did show up, and the other boy ended up being in town so that he could photo copy a practice text to help him study. We gave Hassen and David their new clothes, and they were so excited!
It was decided by Henry and myself that I would only be able to come to the boys house on school nights if it meant that they actually did their school work (there have been nights when its been lots of fun and games, but it is really important that right now the boys are studying). But, much to my relief (because I love to spend evenings with the boys), that they did their homework, even with me there! I actually got to help some of the boys with their homework, and show Ronnie some things on my computer. Oh, another thing I realized today…although I guess I did realize it already..i just never grasped it fully….so the boys were answering some social studies questions, and I had no idea what the answers were (ie. Why were there a larger number of tetse flies around Lake Victoria at the start of the 20th Century?). BUT, if I was at home I could very easily google that and know the answer…for these boys, its either you know(/remember the answer from what your teacher told you) or you don’t. End of story. Unless you have other people around who can help you answer your questions, you are out of luck! Very interesting..
The more and more I spend time with the boys, the more and more I just want to be there. Not only when its fun and games, but when its life. Actually, I enjoyed tonight better then some other nights, cause this is what a night actually looks like for them. I love being part of it…and that they allow me to be part of it.
Anyways, Hassen fell asleep super early and David had fun bugging everyone, until I was smart enough to make up some math questions for him. All in all it is the end of a very good day :)
