Man, I’m starting to slack on my blogs…part of it is because I have so much going on, and part of it is because part of my days have been so frustrating that I’m not sure I can explain it well enough to give it justice. BUT, there are SOME things that I want to remember.
So on Tuesday I spent the day mostly with Alex. Henry was busy taking that new GIVE volunteer around so Alex and I headed in to town first to do some emailing, then to finally show him how to post pictures on facebook, and then we headed to the market to buy tshirts and shorts and belts for Robert and David. I definitely appreciate Alex and everything that he has done/continues to do for me. At this point of time he is just a volunteer for Sanctuary, and he is a great help.
After successfully purchasing everything we needed we headed back to the house. The day before Patrick and I planned to go out to dinner together ( my plan is to take each of the boys out one on one while I am here), so around 5:30 we headed off to town. At first he was saying that he wanted to eat at an African restaurant, but after some coaxing he changed his mind and we went to The Keep, a great Mzungu restaurant with lots of variety of “American Food”. After a lot of explaining, we finally settled on a Chicken Melt for him, and a cheeseburger for me (I wanted him to get the experience of atleast tasting a burger). While we waited for our meal I was able to get to know him better, and learn more about his family situation. He taught me some of his language (which is different from the normal local language, Luganda). Sometimes in the house there are so many boys running around and talking about this and that it is hard to get to really know the boys, but this gave me a great opportunity to really invest in him. We even talked some about my family, and he seemed to really be interested in hearing about what they did and where they lived. Patrick is often one of the more quiet boys in the house, so it was great hanging out with him and getting the chance to have more conversation. When the food came he was definitely please with the chips – aka – French fries, but seemed uncertain about his decision. We soon decided that he would eat the cheeseburger, and I would eat the chicken melt. He also tried salad for the first time, which he was not keen on. The cucumbers and tomatoes yes, but salad, no!
I had promised him earlier that if he didn’t like his meal he could order chocolate cake. Although he did end up enjoying the meal, we still went of the cake in the end. All in all it was a great night, and I am looking forward to the opportunity to do the same with the other boys. (Although the ones that don’t speak a lot of English could be a bit more difficult.)
