Happy Birthday Justin! - Nov 1

Today was a great, laid back relaxing day! There is a new GIVE volunteer who arrived yesterday. Today he was taken around to different placements, so I decided to tag along so that I could see some of the places that people have been talking about. We started by going out to Home of Hope which is a home where they work with children with physical and mental disabilities. It was great to see the children in a home where they are loved and taken care of. After this we headed to Sonrise Babies Home and after that to the Railroads. At this point I went my separate way to head to Sanctuary. I wanted to make sure that Robert and David were still at home and then do some school work with them. When I got there I found Robert, but no David. We were just about to head into town to find him when he came walking down the road.

After lunch we (ok, mostly I) decided that we should do a good clean of the house. Robert was in charge of dishes, and David and I swept, mopped and tided the house. At first David was very defiant and would not listen, but for the first time I used a stern voice with him, and I guess this moved him to action. Patrick was also home this afternoon because he wasn’t feeling well. I guess how it works is that they send you to the dr, and then the dr prescribes medication and you take the ‘perscription’ which is your notebook with some ‘official scratches’ on it plus a stamp (I assume proves that it’s a dr’s note) and you take it to a pharmacy and they see you the medication. Anyways, he was home so he translated some of what David said, which was along the lines of I was upset and he didn’t want me to cry, so he was going to do his work…although I must say that after this we got along a lot better, so we’ll see how it goes.

After cleaning I worked with each boy individually on their alphabet. David did really well on remembering the letters that we had already been working on, and was eager to learn the next letters. I decided that it was easiest to work with each boy individually, so while I was helping David I let Robert play games on my laptop, then we switched. Robert has a lot of a harder time recognizing his letter, but slowly by slowly I think that he will continue to improve!

Henry came with Glen (the new volunteer) and he got a chance to meet the boys. He is hoping to help us out with them at some point in his trip, which I think will be fun for the boys to have him around.

I spent the next hour and a bit with the boys (as they slowly began to trickle home from school) and then it was time to come home! I’ve been finding myself really tired during the days over the last weeks, and think that it is lack of nutrients. Siouxanne shared her multi-vitamins with me this morning, plus a Vitamin C boost, and that made a big difference. I think I am also lacking protein in my diet, so I am going to try to improve that as well. This is making me realize that we need to look at the boys diet, and find more ways to include all of the nutrients that they need and have the right amount of energy. Any good ideas would definitely be appreciated :)

Anyways, I ended the nite with a delicious shepherds pie and pawpaw (papaya) crumble!! I am definitely spoiled when I eat at home!

Praise:

-David and Robert are still at the house

-the boys continue to open up to me more

-Glen is interested in helping with the boys

-my energy is coming back

Pray:

-Steven and Jacob write their final P7 exam (which decides which schools they can get into for Senior school)

-David will become more content at home

-Henry will have enough time/energy to do everything that is required of him

-Hassan – to be discontent on the streets
